Territorial At-Large Representative
Hon. Sharie B. de Castro was elected as a Territorial At-Large Representative to both the 4th and 5th Houses of Assembly of the Virgin Islands in 2019 and 2023, respectively. She currently serves as the Minister for Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports. During her tenure, she has also held the positions of Junior Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Junior Minister for Tourism, and Minister for Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports.
Beyond her political career, Hon. de Castro is a poet, motivational speaker, and the Chief Executive Officer of Write to Read, an educational enterprise dedicated to advancing literacy.
She began her professional journey as an English and Literature teacher at Elmore Stoutt High School, where her passion for education and youth development first took root. That experience has continued to shape her commitment to transforming the education system of the Virgin Islands.
As Minister, Hon. de Castro is the driving force behind the vision "Moving Virgin Islands Education: Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead!" She is a strong believer that meaningful change in education requires reimagining traditional approaches, introducing new strategies, and remaining responsive to a changing world.
She emphasizes the importance of equipping Virgin Islands students with critical 21st-century skills—such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, innovation, global awareness, and technological literacy. She also advocates for the development of entrepreneurial thinking, financial literacy, interpersonal skills, self-direction, and civic responsibility.
At just 28 years old, Hon. de Castro made history as the youngest elected Member of the House of Assembly. She views excellence as an ongoing journey, and this perspective fuels her passion to teach, mentor, and inspire the next generation of leaders. Her guiding mantra, "I make a difference!", reflects her unwavering commitment to service and transformational leadership.
